Lots going on - we've all been so been really busy!

Hi Gang,

Sorry its been a while. I've been really busy and will continue to be for the next week or so. Unfortunately this is not doing Orang-utan stuff, but exam marking instead. My students have been fab though. You can see from what Rebecca has written that they are really busy planning what to do next school year (which begins in September - we finish for our long summer break in two weeks time). They have some fantastic ideas about visiting our feeder primary schools and I'd love them to share their presentation about these with you all. Maybe Caitlin or Rebecca could post a link on this site to their presentation. What do you think girls?

Also, well done to Yolanda and mates for doing the assembly at BHS. It looked like you did a pretty awesome job.

One final thing. Have any of you got access to MSN Messenger. My students are keen to communicate with you this way. Do you have it at home?

Oh and I have been in touch with Jersey Zoo who I am hoping will want to get on board with our project. I would like a contact name from Adelaide Zoo, because they may want to contact Adelaide as a leading example in this field.

what we are doing

we are planning to go to primary schools and raise awareness for orangutans. At the primary schools we are going to speak to year 1s and year 5 on the problems that orangutans face.

hiya - sorry we havent be blogging

hiya, all the girls here ,Sorry we havent been blogging again .we currently going to raise awarness by going to primary schools to educate young children about what is happing to the oraungtans .We have started the outdoor class room but we have left it to the boys because we need to move on doing different things.

There is a petition letter there that you can highlight and print to send to Pepsi to ask them to stop using orangutans in their commercials in the Phillipines. I just wanted to say how pleased I am with the work that everyone is doing. The students are doing some fantastic blogging, so well done! Also I love the image of the male Orang-utan that Mr Vonow has put on to the site. It shows what a majestic and awesome animal these apes truly are.

what ive been up 2

sorry i havent been on for a while i have been busy doing a couple of projects. at school we are doing dance classes for students to raise money for orangutan orphanages and as kerry said we are making a wild life garden and outdoor classroom to promote a new school competition - how green is your tutor group.

also outside of school i have been doing some work with a group of other teenagers on a teenage social site that is raising awareness about orangutans all over the world

Our work so far!

Hi.

I am kerry, I am just wondering what you have been up to in Australia?

We have worked with our canteen staff. We have written letters to businesses about palm oil and have given a presentation about our work to our schoool governors and the head teacher.

We are currently working on creating an outside classroom and would like to know a little bit more about the work that you do at your school that is similar. We know from what Mr Seaton has said that you have an area where you can study native Australian species and that Mr Vonow looks after this. What is this area called? Can you give us any tips for our outdoor classroom. We would like to include a small water feature in our design. This will encourage water life to use the area. We could do with some ideas to help link this outdoor classroom with the Orang-utan work that we have been doing.

Interview with Willie Smits

Hi,
I just heard a marvellous interview with Willie Smits, founder of BOSF (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation). He said all of the things that our school groups are founded upon. He also said that there are over a thousand orphaned orangutans in the rescue sanctuaries now, with about 300 raised and released back into the wild over the last few years.
He has written a great sounding book 'Thinkers of the Jungle', which each of us schools ought to try to get for our libraries.
About three hundred tree species will also disappear if the orangutans go extinct - devastation for the environment of Borneo - as the orangutans eating the fruits of these help to disperse and fertilise the seeds.
Orangutans also know which plants to use for medicines to treat themselves, and so have information for us too; they hold some of the keys to the future for all people on earth, they're not just the property of the Indonesians.

What green screen technology is!

Green screen technology is a virtual computerised map in a weathermans point of view. The weatherman stands in front of a blue/green screen and people film him whilst people are edditing him live to make him seem like he is virtually reporting from outter space.

We now have 10 new weeks ahed of us (term 2).

Students on Holiday!

Hi there everyone.

I thought I would just come on to the blog and let you know that the UK students are on holiday for the next two weeks. However, if any of them have access to the net at home then maybe they will put a brief message on the blog to let you know what they have been doing recently.

Also I thought that your idea of a cake sale at the sports day was fantastic and well done for raising so much money for the Orang-utans.

Would it be possible for one of you to contact the Adelaide Zoo and ask them if they would like to link with us. We may also be getting in touch with Jersey Zoo, here in the UK, whom we already have links with, to see if they are interested with the work that we have done.

Just one final thought. Our school is now linked with three schools in Mauritius and three schools in Ghana in West Africa. We know that Ghana has small numbers of Chimpanzees in their most Northerly rainforests. Perhaps it would be good if we included them in the blog and then they may think about a possible project to help protect the Chimps, particularly as they appear to be growing oil palm over there and that this is having a similar affect on their environment as it has in Indonesia and Malaysia.

BHS Sports Day Fund-raiser

Hi all,

Last Friday we held our annual cake stall at the Sports Day. It went very well, and raised about $180, so it well and truly covers our orangutan sponsorship of $100 fund-raised per year.

Here's some photos of the day. I put some notices in the newsletter and daily bulletin asking people to donate cakes, slices and muffins, and we also made "orangutans" - spiders - our drink of soft drink and icecream. 'Twas a good day indeed!

First photo was later in the day after the wind blew our roof off and nearly everything had been sold!!
